3 Ways AI is Improving Learning & Development Right Now By Chenier Mershon

As a Learning and Development (L&D) professional who tends to be cautious about adopting new technology, I find it both exciting and somewhat intimidating to witness the incredible potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming how organizations approach employee training. I recently attended a conference where several L&D leaders shared how their organizations are leveraging AI in training. Hearing their success stories helped ease my concerns and sparked excitement about the possibilities AI could bring to our industry.

Let’s explore just three ways AI is being used by training teams, with a special focus on one of the most impactful uses: coaching and role plays.

1. Personalized Learning Paths for Employees

One of the most exciting uses of AI in training is its ability to personalize learning. Traditional training programs typically followed a one-size-fits-all approach, often overlooking the unique learning styles, preferences, and needs of individual employees. With AI, training programs are evolving to offer personalized learning paths that adapt based on real-time data and learner feedback.

AI-powered platforms can track the progress of employees, identify gaps in knowledge, and curate content that aligns with the learner’s specific development needs. By analyzing learner behaviors, AI can recommend modules, articles, courses, or even mentor support that target areas where an individual might be struggling. This not only boosts engagement by providing learners with relevant content but also ensures that each employee progresses at a pace that suits them.

For example, if an employee struggles with a particular skill, such as communication, AI can suggest specific resources to improve that area, even providing real-time tips and exercises to practice. The result is a more effective, targeted approach to employee development.

2. Simulated Role Plays and Coaching with AI

AI is also revolutionizing how coaching and role-playing exercises are carried out in training environments. Traditionally, these types of activities can be intimidating, as employees may feel nervous or uncomfortable performing in front of a peer or supervisor. However, AI-driven simulations allow employees to engage in these scenarios in a controlled, low-risk environment. The anonymity and privacy of AI-enabled role play give employees the freedom to practice without fear of judgment, leading to higher levels of comfort and participation.

Example: AI-Powered Role Play in Customer Service Training

Take, for instance, customer service training. Employees can engage in simulated customer interactions, where an AI avatar or chatbot takes on the role of a customer. The AI provides feedback on the employee’s communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, offering suggestions for improvement. Employees can repeat the role play as many times as necessary to build confidence, master key skills, and refine their responses.

This not only makes employees feel more comfortable practicing, but it also offers immediate feedback that allows them to adjust their approach in real-time. No more waiting for a review from a supervisor days later, AI provides the opportunity to learn and improve in the moment.

3. Real-Time Feedback and Continuous Improvement

Immediate feedback is one of the most powerful aspects of AI in training. In traditional training environments, feedback often comes after the fact—days or even weeks after an employee has completed a training session or activity. However, AI offers the ability to give learners instant feedback during their training exercises, which leads to more efficient learning.

Real-time feedback helps employees understand their strengths and areas for improvement without the delay of waiting for a supervisor’s input. Whether they’re participating in a role play, completing a quiz, or working through a learning module, AI can evaluate their responses and provide specific insights that are tailored to the individual.

This continuous feedback loop also helps training teams identify patterns in performance, allowing them to adjust the training material on the fly to better support learners. The AI can even recommend additional resources to reinforce weak areas, ensuring that learning is always aligned with the employee’s evolving needs.

Conclusion: The AI-Powered Future of Learning

In conclusion, while I initially approached the integration of AI in training with caution, the insights shared by my peers at the conference have started to shift my perspective. The real-world applications of AI in training have proven to be both practical and innovative, offering opportunities to enhance learning experiences, streamline processes, and drive measurable results. As the possibilities of AI continue to unfold, I’m eager to explore how we can embrace this technology to create more personalized, effective, and dynamic training programs.
