As a learning and development (L&D) professional, I am always looking for new ways to enhance workplace learning and foster resilience. Recently, I attended an ATD Dallas chapter meeting, where I learned how a major global organization integrates mindfulness into their learning programs. The session was eye-opening, reinforcing how mindfulness is not just a personal well-being practice but a key driver of professional effectiveness and resilience. This aligns directly with the ATD Capability Model under Developing Professional Capability, particularly in teaching techniques that support resilience, such as meditation, mindfulness, and perspective-shifting.
The Role of Mindfulness in Professional Growth
Mindfulness, the practice of being fully present in the moment, enhances both personal and professional effectiveness. Research has shown that incorporating mindfulness techniques into the workplace can lead to improved focus, reduced stress, and increased emotional intelligence—key attributes for successful leadership and collaboration.
At the ATD Dallas meeting, we explored how the organization recognized these benefits and is integrating mindfulness training into their work and developed their own mindfulness program. Launched in 2019 with just 125 team members, the program has experienced significant growth, now boasting over 1,900 members. The curriculum is structured around three key stages: Explore, Expand, and Extend, each designed to progressively deepen participants’ mindfulness journey.
Why A Minute to Arrive Makes All the Difference
Picture this: You’re running from meeting to meeting, trying to wrap up an email, respond to a text, make a quick call, and juggle a million other tasks. Sound familiar? It’s easy to feel scattered and overwhelmed, leaving little room to reset your mind for the next challenge ahead. That’s where I found their idea of A Minute to Arrive technique absolutely brilliant. It’s a quick and effective mindfulness practice designed to help you reset and ground yourself before starting a new task or meeting. Its purpose is to bring you back to the present moment, especially after a busy or stressful period, allowing you to transition smoothly with a focused mind.
This practice encourages meeting attendees to take one minute at the start of each meeting to wrap up whatever they were working on or responding to, giving them a moment to transition and focus entirely on the upcoming conversation. By recognizing that our personal lives and other responsibilities often pull our attention in different directions, A Minute to Arrive helps create space for us to be present and fully engaged in the discussion. It’s a simple yet powerful way to acknowledge the chaos of our lives while ensuring that, when it’s time to connect, we can do so with clarity and focus.
To further support mindfulness, the company also schedules meetings in 25- or 55-minute blocks, giving employees transition periods to address immediate concerns before moving on to the next meeting or task. This structured approach fosters a more intentional, focused, and engaged workforce.
Embedding Mindfulness in Learning and Development
For learning professionals, incorporating mindfulness into development initiatives requires both knowledge and practice. Strategies to embed mindfulness into training programs include:
- Encouraging brief mindfulness exercises before or after learning sessions.
- Introducing reflection techniques that enhance retention and engagement.
- Providing employees with access to mindfulness apps and digital resources.
- Leading by example, practicing mindfulness in leadership and coaching interactions.
The Future of Mindful Learning
As organizations continue to evolve, integrating mindfulness into learning and development will become even more critical. A mindful workforce is a resilient workforce—one that can navigate challenges with clarity, focus, and emotional intelligence. Simple practices like A Minute to Arrive and structured mindfulness programs can significantly improve focus, engagement, and productivity. By embedding these techniques into our professional environments, we empower employees to be present, connected, and better equipped to handle challenges.
As learning professionals, it’s our responsibility to create spaces where both personal and professional growth can thrive. I encourage you to take the first step—whether it’s introducing a quick mindfulness practice in your next meeting or exploring mindfulness resources to share with your team. Together, we can create more resilient, focused, and connected organizations that truly support the growth of every individual. The time for mindful learning is now. Let’s lead the way.
